I like being around people I can learn from, listen to, and those who have great values they can bring to this world. As my father would say, “I like being around good people.”
If they asked me Do you see yourself as a good person? I’d say yes. Everyone would say yes. Am I? What does it mean to be a good person? I could give you so many answers and possibilities and someone could tell me “hey, let’s get back on track”, but there’s no doubt that there’s one thing that, for me, is very important: helping others. Social and economic situations don’t matter. It’s always possible to help and you can do it in many different ways. You can always do more. You can always choose.
Yesterday was one of those days when you go to bed thinking about if you really are a good person or not. I’m sure I wasn’t the only one thinking it. For sure the more than 250 people that were there with me at the premiere thought the same.
And in a little less than 50 minutes, a normal person, like you and me, gave us a lesson on humanity, generosity and personal enrichment that leave you thinking, “I wish I was in a world with more people like you.” Ok, no. He isn’t that normal. He’s 6 feet 10 inches tall with enviable physical features and one of the best players in the NBA. His name is Serge Ibaka.
Now he’s an NBA star, but nobody ever gifted him with anything. He had a rough childhood in Congo and, when he dreamed of being an NBA star, nobody took him seriously. Nobody but himself.
On June 22nd, in the movie theater “Cines Callao” in Madrid, he presented his documentary “Son of the Congo”, a documentary that tells the story of his life and which is charitable to the foundation with his name. It also helps many children from around the world to believe in themselves, to overcome their fears and fight for their dreams.
